Back To Basics Donna Sinclair, CEO Back to Basics thinking like “It takes a village to raise a child” will be at the forefront of our work during 2011/2012. Time after time we hold post mortems; we mourn the killings of yet another and another and another youth. We look for reasons within homes and blame parents for any social disorder amongst young people. Legislation after legislation, multiple meetings and forums, enquires and consultations, have brought very little returns. We very often fail remember children live what they learn. It is high time that we worked using the village concept. We must execute resolute action, not just talk about social inclusion but act to enable feelings of self-worth and inclusion for our youths. Poverty, mental health, drugs, youth violence, schools expulsions, youth and police relations, domestic violence and other ills cause dysfunction amongst young people. We are not a village when we think that it is weird to say ‘Good Morning’ or otherwise to each other. Not knowing the first name of our next door neighbour can only be described as one of the symptoms of an unsuitable environment to raise our children in. If we do not duly concern ourselves about challenges for young people to be seen and heard where it matters, we are likely to fail proactively in building responses to their issues. As sector professionals, activists, decision makers and elders, young people need us to support them to find solutions for their unrelenting challenges. By going “Back to Basics” in our respective villages we intend to lead by example to safeguard the wellbeing of young people and their affairs. Parents must be supported to socialise and educate their children to expect more and achieve more academically and socially. Community involvement and effective thinking focused on substantially reducing community post mortems caused by mis-education, knives, gun, drugs, school expulsions, family breakdown, youth offending and imprisonment must be a realistic and worthwhile intervention to influence positive outcomes for our villages. Special Thanks Special thanks and acknowledgements to Chuka, Amunna MP, David Kidney ex Minister & MP, Dr Nehusi Kimani, Professor Gus John, Dr Cheron Byfield, Stephen Brooks, Andrew Muhammad, Zenobia-Cowan Davies, Stephen Brooks, Delphine Duff, Emmanuel Edada, Cathy Toger, Shelia, Doreen Doku, Jacqueline Mars, Theodore Ilori, Dr Adrian Stamp, Laureate Pratt, Wayne Bongo Tetty, Dr Abu, Superintendent Howe, Sgt Tom Cornish and very importantly our service users, commissioned staff, volunteers and Board Members for their contributions to our work during the past 6 years. -Donna Sinclair
